The Gun Range

Tuesday, September 8th, 2015 at 8:37 pm

I love going to the gun range.  I have two different gun ranges that I go to. One is called Youngs Long Shot in Wolcottville, Indiana ( just north of Fort Wayne) and the other is a state run gun range  some 29 miles from my house.  Youngs gun range is a private membership , but the dues are worth it. This range goes out to 1000 yards. I have a AR 308 that I have consistently hit out to the 600 yard  metal targets.  Makes me realize my limitations with the rifles that I have and with my own style of shooting.  I have learned a few things:

16 inch AR 308s are not meant to go out for long range shots…  I am in the process of saving money so I can get a 24 inch upper that is compatible with my lower for my AR 308.

I am in the process of getting a suppressor for my 223/5.56 and my AR 308. The suppressor is the Recce7. It is rated for the 300 Winchester Magnum.   I used my friends AR 4 that he has suppressed and noticed that the recoil is decreased. I know that the recoil for a 5.56 round is not that great to begin with, but I can only imagine and look forward to the decreased recoil when I have my 308 suppressed. One problem I have is when I shoot the 308, my rifle gets of target.  In good time…..

I have decided that I want to purchase a 300 Winchester Magnum bolt action rifle to take to the gun range. I know about the bolt action vs Semi debate in regards to accuracy.  I want to be accurate but when it comes down to it, I just want to have fun.  The MOA at 1000 yards is supposed to be 10 inches.  If I hit the 1000 yard targets on a consistent basis, I would be satisfied. The bolt action rifle I am looking to purchase is the Mossberg Patriot Night Train  in the 300 Winchester Magnum caliber. It comes already with a bipod , a decent looking  scope, so who knows !
